Spikers open season

Matches and tourney . . .

The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles volleyball teams opened the 2009 season last week with matches against Centerville and a varsity tournament at Cameron.

Lady Eagles varsity and junior varsity spikers were shut out by Centerville, and the varsity squad went 3-3 in tournament play.

Against Centerville, the FHS varsity fell in three games 14-25, 14-25, 9-25.

On the front row, Robin Davis hit eight kill shots and Kiresten Cox hit three. They were aided by setters Sarah Linton, six assists, and Kayse Kirgan, four assists.

Top servers were Becca Lyles, eight good serves with an ace, Miss Cox with five serves without a miss and Miss Linton, an ace.

Defensively, Miss Lyles made five digs.

Named all-around player in the match was Miss Davis.

The Fairfield jv squad fell to Centerville in two games, 22-25, 16-25.

Leading hitters were Jordan Gandy, Kathleen Chappell and Andrea Griffin, and most consistent server was Kendall Dotson.

At the Centerville tourney, the Lady Eagles claimed a pair of wins in pool play and one in bracket play.

"It was real competitive. There wasn't one dominant team and there weren't any weak teams," head coach Dennis Johnson says.

Fairfield met Lexington first, winning in two games 25-23, 25-21.

Kill leaders were Miss Cox, nine, and Miss Davis, 6, while Misses Kirgan and Linton made seven assists each.

Top servers were Misses Kirgan and Lyles, best defensive players were Misses Cox and Lyles, and best all-around was Miss Cox.

The Lady Eagles trounced Thorndale in the second pool game 25-19, 25-11.

From the serving line, Miss Cox hit 13 without a miss and got three aces, and Miss LInton hit eight without a miss and had two aces.

Kill leaders were Misses Cox and Davis, five each, and Misses Kirgan and Linton made six assists each.

Defensively, Miss Cox made four digs and Jessica Gallegos made three. Allaround player was Miss Linton.

Fairfield suffered a loss in pool play against Rogers, 23-25, 25-19, 18- 25.

Serving a dozen without a miss, and with an ace, was Miss Gallegos, while Kaitlyn Palmquist had eight good serves and an ace, and Miss Linton had 16 good serves with an ace.

On the front row, Miss Cox hit 10 kills, Miss Davis hit nine and McKenzie Beddingfield hit five.

Setters Misses Kirgan and Linton provided 15 and nine assists, respectively, Miss Gallegos made seven digs, Miss Lyles made six digs and Miss Kirgan was picked best allaround.

The Lady Eagles played a close first bracket match against Lago Vista, falling in two games 22-25, 20-25.

Hitting nine good serves with an ace was Miss Palmquist, and Miss Cox hit seven with an ace.

Kill leaders were Misses Cox and Davis, five each, helped by Miss Linton, six assists, and Miss Kirgan, four assists.

On defense, Misses Cox and Gallegos made five digs each, and Miss Cox was named best all-around.

Fairfield spikers redeemed themselves in the second bracket match, beating Milano in three games 25-17, 17-25, 25-15.

Top servers were Miss Linton, 13 with an ace, and Miss Palmquist, 10 with two aces, and kill leaders were Miss Cox, 16, and Miss Davis, eight.

Assists were provided by Miss Linton, 16, and Miss Kirgan, 10, Misses Lyles and Cox had nine digs each, and Miss Linton was named best all-around.

The Lady Eagles fell in a pair of close games to Waco Riecher, 23-25, 19-25, to close out the tourney.

Kill leaders were Miss Cox, 12, and Miss Davis, four, and top servers were Miss Kirgan, 11 with two aces, and Miss Lyles, 12.

Assists were provided by Miss Linton, nine, and Miss Kirgan, seven, while Misses Gallegos and Cox made three digs each.

Picked best all-around was Miss Davis.

"Every game was close," Johnson says. "If we could have played more consistently we could have played in the championship."

The Lady Eagles was scheduled to play at Connally early this week and head to Waco University on Tuesday.

Over the weekend, the varsity plays a tournament at Leon and the jv and freshmen teams play a tourney at Teague.
