*On this date in the year 1857 a momentous occasion occurred in San Antonio as the very first Overland Stage left the Alamo City headed west toward the sunset, enroute to San Diego, California. This was our first attempt at cross country passenger and mail service. Heretofore there had been no quick method to travel across the United States. It was slow, dusty and hot by our standards of today, but seemed a miracle to those of that day and time. Way stations for team change-outs were located at regular intervals over the entire route. If my memory serves me correctly, the route started in St. Louis, crossed into Texas near Gainesville, then to San Antonio, El Paso and due west to California. An arid country, even in a good year. A quicker method would surface in just a few years at least for the mails and news of the day, the Pony Express. Progress would again step forward on this short lived method with the first transcontinental telegraph, then next, with a big boost toward populating the American West, the building of the Union Pacific Railroad. They could handle bulk mail, express freight as well as passengers. It would take another 40 years, but our country would rapidly become crisscrossed with rail and wire. It all happened in one lifetime…..All of which traces back to that first primitive stage line in 1857…..Gainesville to San Antonio to El Paso to California.

FEMS to Tanglewood, mother having diabetic troubles. FPD to reported break-in on McDonald. FPD to ER, report of man with gunshot to foot. TPD Solly and Martin, Deputy House to construction site, Teague ISD, open gate and band hall. FPD Warren arrests Marijuana Man on Dogan. 911 comes in concerning house on fire, McKinney Street, Mexia, Mexia VFD contacted and advised. Deputies to Butler area, 32 year old either drunk, high on drugs, etc., very combative to family.

3-4 year old child darts across US-84 at Fair Park, slipped away from home, returned to residence by FPD Gassaway. No, this was not the typical ignored child. Just a bold little girl. I know both parents. They wouldn't have had that happen for anything in the world. She just pulled a Houdini and slipped away. Now you see her, now you don't. I won't mention where she started from…..but for a little girl of her age….Well, she took quite a hike. Thank Heavens it all turned out on the safe side.

TPD Cox to N. 4th, Family Troubles. Streetman VFD to grassfire in median, Mile 209. Tree blocking Old 75, Dew, TxDOT advised. THDEMS to China, Grandma fell, hip hurting bad. Dep. Barrentine deals with man on American Express card he found missing, someone has most generously charged $7,500.00 on it for him in New Mexico. I've been sweating out my own which I misplaced and still haven't found….But got a replacement, with new number, very speedily. Fortunately for me, apparently nobody else found it either. Fairfield VFD to Sunset, something burning in yard.

Until Next Week . . . RALPH BILLINGS
