Historic church is repaired by 'Samaritans'
A pair of Good Samaritans provided equipment, labor and materials Saturday to make repairs to Stewards Mill Harmony Church north of Fairfield.
Fascia boards on the church building, a wooden structure built in 1876, were rotting and replaced.
Church member Pam Day reports that a need for repairs was mentioned recently and two church members, R.D. Quinn and Mark Smith, stated that that they could get the job done.
Crews and materials, all donated, showed up at the church Saturday morning and repairs were completed by mid afternoon.
Also providing equipment was Red Hat Rentals.
Providing the work skills were Diego Ruiz, Juan Diaz, Ernesto Serrato and Tony Pellom.
Church members provided lunch for the work crew.
The non denominational church is a single room containing three sections of pews and a pulpit. The building does not have electricity or plumbing, but is heated in winter by a pair of wood-burning stoves and lit with kerosene lanterns when needed.
Services are conducted at 8 a.m. Sunday by pastors David Filis and Robert Shipley.
Stewards Mill Harmony received a Texas Historical Marker in 1965.
