Drug bust made during traffic stop

Two men were arrested on drug charges Saturday afternoon near Dew in what started with a routine traffic stop.

Arrests were made by Freestone county deputies Robert Willis and Cory House, with assistance from Teague Police Cpl. Shawn Solly and a K-9 unit.

The deputies on patrol on Hwy. 179 noticed a pickup being driven by Joe A. Perkins, 56, whom they knew was not legally licensed to drive, Sheriff Ralph Billings reports

Perkins was stopped and a search of his vehicle was conducted, making use of the Teague Police Department drug detecting dog handled by Solly.

Billings reports the dog "alerted" several times on the vehicle, indicating the possible presence of narcotics.

Close examination of the vehicle by the officers revealed a baggie concealed inside the right door area containing 5.9 grams of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, the sheriff says.

Perkins and a passenger in the pickup, Felipe A. Gaitan, 30, were arrested and jailed on charges of manufacture and/or delivery of a controlled substance.
