The old Miller building on the southwest corner of the square is being torn down this week to make way for a modern brick building to be erected within the coming two months to be occupied by Steward and Burleson's furniture and undertaking establishment.

Thursday July 26, federal officers led by J.K. Ray, made a raid 11 miles northeast of Fairfield, and captured 185 gallons of liquor stored in a garage, a light truck and a complete aging plant which was installed in the garage. Four people were arrested, carried to Waco and charged with violation of the Federal Revenue laws.

Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Baker of Streetman were entertained by their children with a golden wedding anniversary celebration at their home Sunday, July 12. The Bakers were married 50 years ago in Fairfield by Sam McCowan.

Eight candidates for the Freestone County Fair queen contest have been officially announced, according to Mrs. C.E. Childs, Jr. They are Jerrye Steward, Linda Oakes, Wanda York, Barbara West, Gayle Smith, Carol Allbright, Kathy Davis and Vera Jo Neal.
F.B. Peyton and T.R. Bonner were re-elected as members to the board of the Freestone County Hospital, and Wirt Wood was elected as a new board member at the annual meeting at Mack's Cafe Tuesday night.
Mr. Wood succeeds H.B. Steward, who has served on the board since the hospital was established in 1947.
The board's financial report noted that 1,573 patients were admitted during the year, and 2,690 out-patients. Gross income was $151,172.56, with operating expenses totaling $120,590.93.
1984 Hoover Carden, Fairfield native and son of the late Isiah and Anna Carden, was honored at the National 4-H Council meeting in Washington, D.C., where he met President Ronald Reagan. Carden received the "building on experience" trowel to recognize his personal commitment to the 4-H campaign to help solve the nation's drug and alcohol abuse program.
Carden is administrator of the Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A&M.
Coins commemorating the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles are available at Farmers State Bank. The coins are minted in gold and silver and are available individually or in sets.
First National Bank chairman Hugh Bonner announced the promotions of three employees. Gene Chavers and Don Ayres have been named vice presidents, and Janie Casey was elevated to the position of cashier.
Fairfield Tennis Association held its first meeting July 19. Fairfield head coach Carl Peters headed the meeting, during which the following officers were elected to serve for six month: Barbara Peters, president; Dr. John Carr, vice president; Cindy Capps, secretary; and Vikki Glass, treasurer and reporter.

A granite marker on the Freestone county courthouse square honoring law enforcement officers and firemen who died in the line of duty will be dedicated Sunday afternoon.
The marker bears four names: Sheriff James B. Rogers, who died Aug. 13, 1872, Constable Bragg Dunbar, Aug. 9, 1918, Special Texas Ranger Tim Willard, Aug. 1, 1928, and volunteer fireman Barvon C. Hamilton, Aug. 1, 1998.
Oklahoma-based Love's Country Stores plans to start construction in November on its long-anticipated travel center in Fairfield. Love's was founded by Tom Love in 1964 when he reopened an abandoned gas station in Watonga, Okla
Fairfield high school student Tonya Bailey attended the Texas Farm Bureau's 36th annual citizenship seminar, held last month in San Angelo.
Several members of the Fairfield PTA traveled to Austin to attend the state PTA summer leadership seminar. Attending were president Beth Ireland, first vice president Doug Sanford, second vice president Carla Schutty, historian Mysti Duncan, and Karen Tanner, newsletter.
