Second straight month . . .

For the second consecutive month, sales tax money reimbursed to the City of Fairfield by the state comptroller shows a drop from the amount received in the same months of 2008.

Fairfield receives a check from the comptroller for $145,475 this month, down 49.38 percent from the $287,442 reimbursed last July.

In June, the sales tax reimbursement was $166,008, down 17.83 percent from the $202,054 received in June 2008.

Past months show declines in February and April this year.

Despite smaller checks in four of seven months, sales tax revenue for Fairfield is running a slight .99 percent ahead of 2008, totaling $1.47 million compared to $1.46 million for the same period in 2008.

July checks reflect taxes collected on May sales and reported to the comptroller in June.

Teague, on the other hand, is experiencing an increase in sales tax money—-the July check is for $41,710, up 2.41 percent from the $40,726 received a year ago.

So far in 2009, sales tax revenue in Teague has increased 11.68 percent, from $305,217 to $340,896.

Streetman also is showing a big increase this year, 42.09 percent, with rev- enue this year reaching $15,771, compared to $11,099 reimbursed during the same period in 2008.

July check to Streetman is $2,604, up 90.89 percent from the $1,364 reimbursed a year ago.

Wortham receives $6,134 this month, down 17.57 percent from the $7,442 reimbursed last July. For the year, payments are down 7.29 percent, from $65,686 to $60,893.

Sales tax checks in Anderson county total $429,471 this month, down 11.74 percent from the $484,616 received last July. Payments in Anderson county are up 1.34 percent this year, from $3.64 million to $3.69 million.

Communities in Leon county are reimbursed a total of $105,881 this month, up 1.24 percent from the $104,583 received last July. For the year, payments are up 15.33 percent, from $786,111 to $906,632.

Payments tally $268,779 this month in Limestone county, down 2.26 percent from the $275,009 reimbursed last July. Limestone county communities have received $2.02 million this year, up from $2.01 million.

Checks to communities in Navarro county total $383,874 this month, down 7.34 percent from the $414,284 received last July. For the year, payments are down 1.55 percent, from $3.1 million to $3.07 million.

Largest check distributed by the comptroller this month, $37 million, goes to Houston and reflects a 4.71 percent decrease from a year ago.

Dallas is reimbursed $14.9 million, down 21.52 percent from last July.

Statewide, the comptroller sent sales tax reimbursement checks this month totaling $284 million to the 1,135 cities that collect the optional levy, a figure that is down 8.83 percent from last July.

Sales tax payments across the state total $2.27 billion this year, down 1.61 percent from the 2008 figure of $2.3 billion.
