1934
A small cyclone swooped down on Wortham at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon, leaving destruction to property in the city, estimated at from $50,000 to $100,000, and injuring two citizens, Walton Stubbs and Walter Moore, who were caught under falling debris at Posey and Lindley Gin.
Tuesday the sheriff's department brought in a truckload of bonded liquor, the truck having wrecked between Fairfield and Teague. The shipment consisted of 30 cases of supposed high grade liquors. Driver of the truck was brought to town. The grand jury investigated the case.
John Dillinger, arch enemy of the age, was shot dead Sunday night by a group of Department of Justice operatives as he walked out of a movie theater in Chicago, Ill.
He whipped an automatic pistol out of his pocket and had it half raised when the operatives loosed a withering blast of bullets that dropped him, mortally wounded. He died a few minutes later.

1959 Engagement of Miss Margaret Ann Ivy and Don Tolar of Ennis was announced at a beautiful party at the home of Mrs. Athel Ivy on West Main Saturday afternoon.
The bride-to-be is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Ivy of Fairfield, and Mr. Tolar's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Everett Glen Tolar of Ennis.
Opening game for the 1959 Eagle season will be Sept. 4 against Centerville. Coach Dean Madison states that physical examinations will begin Aug. 14.
Rev. E.W. Henry, pastor of Round Prairie Baptist Church and former pastor of the Caney Church, will conduct revival services at Caney Baptist Church July 26-Aug. 2.
Rev. Jack McDaniel will begin the service, J.D. Harris will direct the singing, and Mrs. Wiley Stroud will be the pianist.
County agent J.H. Pritchard says in his column that cotton insects are taking their toll in many fields over the county. He recommends that all cotton producers watch their fields closely, making actual counts about every other day.

Freestone county has been declared eligible for Farmers Home Administration disaster emergency loans as a result of freeze damages suffered in Dec. 1983 and Jan. 1984, according to Charles H. Joiner, FmHA county supervisor.
Rhonda Bangs, Kristin Skarbovig, and Julie Skarbovig, Young Homemakers' president, are busy putting in new plants for the Freestone county courthouse flower pots as part of Beautification Month. They are representing the Young Homemakers' Club of Fairfield.
Fairfield high school band directors John Gordon Small and Terry Parrish have announced that summer band rehearsals will begin on Monday for FHS and Fairfield junior high school bands.
Alpha Phi Psi sorority held a called meeting last week at the home of member Carol Wallrath to make plans for the upcoming Freestone County Fair.
Michelle Posey will represent the sorority as candidate in the Miss Freestone County pageant.
1999
The old water tower behind city hall for the past 63 years was demolished this week. The 100,000 gallon tank was taken down because it was coated with lead-based paint, an environmental hazard.
U.S. Postal Service officials are seeking public input on the location of the new post office in Fairfield. The list has been narrowed down to two possible locations, one where the former Utley feed store stands, and the second behind John Awalt's Roadster Car Wash.
A 5-percent rate incrase for water and sewer service in Fairfield is pending before the Fairfield city council. Under the proposed plan, biggest jump is for minimum residential sewer service, up $1.89 from $5.10 to $6.99 for up to 2,000 gallons.
Fairfield school board last week accepted a $41,000 bid to air condition the intermediate school gym and high school fieldhouse.
Rejected was a $107,000 bid from Wood and Sons of Tyler.
A student from Fairfield, Tonya Renee Small, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Stephen F. Austin State University.
Miss Small is the daughter of John Gordon and Mary Small, and is an interdisciplinary studies
