Lavilla "Ione" Newton Funeral services were held Monday for Lavilla "Ione" Newton of Fairfield at Bailey and Foster in Palestine. David Franklin officiated. Burial followed at Palestine City Cemetery. Mrs. Newton, 90, formerly of Elkhart, was preceded in death by her parents, her husband W.C. "Mutt" Newton and her only son Lucky Newton. She was born Nov. 11, 1918 in Fairfield to Joe Fred and Althea Roberts Emmons. She was a longtime Methodist, a homemaker and a caregiver to young and old. Mrs. Newton continued to work on her farm and in her garden until weeks before her death. She took care of others, and sat with many loved ones during their final hours. She babysat many children and is still known in the community as "Gammy". Mrs. Newton prided herself in her family and her independence. She will be deeply missed by family, friends and her beloved dog Crystal. Survivors are daughter Renee Gunnels and husband Gary, and granddaughters Misty McAdams and husband Craig, Amy Clark and husband Mike, all of Elkhart, and Kristy Oates and husband Steven of Fairfield. The deceased was also fortunate enough to have spent many years teaching and loving her greatgrandchildren Larami and Colby McAdams, Kollin and Karson Purdue and Justice Oates, and stepgreat grandchildren Calah and Sydney Clark. Pallbearers were Danny Clyde Turner, Tom Anderson, Roger Parker, Bob Stroud, Bobby James and Ronny Bridges. Honorary pallbearers were Don Tolar, Zelt Dunbar, Charles Dunbar and Jimmy McAdams. Visitation was Sunday night at Bailey and Foster Funeral Home in Palestine.
