Sales tax revenue drops

This month in Fairfield . . .

Sales tax revenue for the City of Fairfield dropped 17.83 percent this month, compared to what the city received from the Texas State Comptroller last June.

Fairfield receives a check for $166,008 this month as reimbursement for taxes collected by merchants on April retail sales and reported to the comptroller in May.

In June 2008, the city was reimbursed $202,054.

Statewide, sales tax reimbursements for June fell 3.04 percent from a year ago, to $297 million.

Although the June check is for a lesser amount, Fairfield sales tax revenue for the year is up 13.35 percent. The city has received $1.3 million for the first six months of the year, compared to $1.17 million during the same period in 2008.

Sales tax revenue throughout Texas is down .49 percent to $1.99 billion for the first half of the year.

Fairfield is the only community in Freestone county showing a drop in June sales tax money.

Teague is reimbursed $45,558 this month, up 8.09 percent from the $42,147 received last June. For the year, payments to Teague are up 13.11 percent, from $264,491 to $299,186.

Wortham receives $7,439 this month, up 8.66 percent from the June 2008 payment of $6,846. Wortham has received a total of $54,759 this year, down 5.98 percent from $58,243.

The City of Streetman is reimbursed $2,699 this month, up 91.14 percent from the $1,412 received last June. For the year, Streetman sales tax revenue is up 35.25 percent, from $9,735 to $13,137.

Communities in Anderson county receive checks totaling $440,522 this month, down 8.47 percent from the $481,298 reimbursed last June. Payments this year are up 3.36 percent, from $3.15 million to $3.26 million.

Reimbursements in Leon county total $107,846 this month, down 2.62 percent from the June 2008 total of $110,751. For the year, payments in Leon county are up 17.59 percent, from $681,533 to $800,750.

In Limestone county payments total $273,898 this month, down 1.02 percent from the $276,738 received last June. Payments this year are up .87 percent, from $1.74 million to $1.75 million.

Sales tax checks in Navarro county total $422,539 this month, up 3.33 percent from the $408,914 reimbursed last June. For the year, payments are down .66 percent, from $2.7 million to $2.68 million.

Biggest payment this month, $37 million, goes to the City of Houston and reflects a 4.94 percent drop from a year ago.

Dallas is reimbursed $15.9 million, down 11.87 percent from last June.

Statewide, the comptroller mailed payments totaling $297 million to Texas cities that collect the optional tax on retail sales. That tally is 3.04 percent less than was reimbursed in June 2008.
