Dickie is the most senior of all County Employees of Freestone County. A very well-known individual in our County. We wish him the very best in his retirement.

911 Bounce comes in from Palestine. Nothing out of the ordinary, happens all the time in every County. The oddity of the deal was the caller's last name…..Turnip. Had never seen that one. The closest I can think of is the Waco area family with the last name of Turnipseede.

Corsicana Policeman at home, asleep, wee hours of the morning. The phone rang at 3AM….A neighbor next door, someone had broken into his house, and was still downstairs! The Corsicana Policeman leaps from bed, wearing only a pair of shorts, throws on his gunbelt and runs next door. He cut his feet up on glass from a broken window where the crook made entry, spots the guy and apprehends him. The arrestee is high on something, babbling endlessly about trying to escape from seven guys who had just jumped on him right outside……Turns out the crook was very high on Ecstacy…..And oh yes, the seven guys? They weren't there at all…..Never had been…..But the crook did appear to be all banged up…... He hadn't fought seven men….Not even two…..No indeed…..His had been a mighty battle, and in his own mind (high on Ecstacy) it had been with those seven men of his imagination….. But close examination in the back yard yielded his antagonist……Not seven, nor even two……One mighty Magnolia Tree, it's smaller, lower limbs beat and mangled, fresh human skin still hanging from the knots and bark! In his own mind he had met and defeated his enemy, but when the battle had subsided, that Magnolia still stood unmoved, unlike the pugilist assaulter, in its original location, totally unafraid, as it had for many years.

Some kids are out of school, some aren't as of yet. Let us all be on guard in our driving, usage of 4- Wheelers, etc. We want those kids around for the next school year, not laid up in a hospital or worse. Parents: Do all you can to keep those kids busy. If they put in a good day of labor, they're more inclined to stay home at night, not out roaming around. Non-Parents: See if you can think up a few odd jobs around your house to hire those kids to do. A good work ethic starts at an early age. See if you can help start them out on the right foot. Whether mowing a yard, raking, planting flowers, painting a fence or unloading feed, you'll find that most are willing workers, anxious to please. These kids are our citizens of tomorrow. They'll work, if we show them how, use common sense and brag on 'em when they do a good job.

Until Next Week . . . RALPH BILLINGS
