To area softball . . .

An RBI single by catcher Becca Lyles that scored shortstop Kayse Kirgan advanced the Fairfield high school Lady Eagles softball team to the area playoff game Friday night.

The Lady Eagles tallied a 3-2 win over the Groesbeck Lady Goats in the bi-district game played at Corsicana.

The bi-district game was delayed about a week when the University Interscholastic League shut down athletic and academic competiton because of the swine flu scare.

Because of the delay, the Lady Eagles had not played a softball game since beating Athens on April 17.

Fairfield is slated to meet Bullard in the area playoff game this week.

The Lady Eagles are the District 20-AAA co-champions with Brownsboro but seeded at bi-district as the second place team from the district. Brownsboro had a first round bye.

Groesbeck scored first, in the second inning, taking advantage of an error to put a runner on base, who later came home on a passed ball.

In the fourth, the Lady Goats singled and the runner advanced on a fielder's choice and scored on another fielder's choice to claim a 2-0 lead.

Over the remaining three innings, though, Groesbeck only sent 10 players up to bat. Fielding by the FHS nine accounted for six outs and pitcher Courtney Nelson fanned three.

The Lady Eagles scored twice in the fifth inning when right fielder Mia Mayo crossed the plate on a double by center fielder Shelby Bayless and Miss Kirgan came home on an error by the Lady Goats' catcher. The runs tied the contest.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, designated hitter Riley Davidson doubled, but was later caught off second base. Miss Kirgan singled to reach first, moved to second on a fielder's choice that saw Miss Bayless on base safely and scored on a single to center by Miss Lyles.

Winning pitcher Miss Nelson faced 25 batters, striking out seven and walking three. She allowed two runs on four hits.

The Lady Eagles scored three runs on just four hits and left five players stranded in the contest.

Fairfield committed two errors, which led to one score, and the Lady Goats committed one error.

The FHS squad advanced to bi-district the past three years, and went to area in 2006.
