Sales tax money tops $1 million

The million dollar mark in sales tax revenue moved up a month for the City of Fairfield with receipt of its May reimbursement check from the Texas Comptroller.

Fairfield receives $391,994 this month, a 51.52 percent increase from the $258,700 reimbursed last May.

For the year, the city has received sales tax revenue totaling $1.16 million, a 19.85 percent increase from the $969,731 figure a year ago.

The city receached the million dollar mark in June last year.

May checks mailed from the comptroller's office to Texas cities that collect the optional levy reflect taxes collected on March retail sales and reported to the comptroller in April.

Statewide, sales tax revenue is not as good as what Fairfield is experiencing—- checks this month total $367 million, down 2.82 percent from $378 million last May.

Through the first five month, sales tax revenue in the state has held steady at about $1.69 billion.

The City of Teague is reimbursed $62,609 this month, up 2.78 percent from the $60,913 received last May. For the year, payments to Teague are up 14.07 percent, from $222,344 to $253,627.

Payment to Wortham this month is $15,597, just $32 more than last May. Sales tax revenue in Wortham is down 7.93 percent this year, from $51,396 to $47,319.

Streetman receives $2,774 this month, down 2.32 percent from the May 2008 reimbursement of $2,842. For the year, payments are up 25.76 percent, from $8,323 to $10,467.

Sales tax payments to communities in Anderson county totals $710,675 this month, up 4.01 percent from the $683,269 received last May. Payments this year are up 5.49 percent, from $2.7 million to $2.8 million.

In Leon county, reimbursments total $170,488 this month, up 25.37 percent from the $135,984 received last May. Payments this year are up 21.39 percent, from $570,781 to $692,904.

Communities in Limestone county receive checks totaling $331,080 this month, down 4.75 percent from the May 2008 reimbursement of $347,606. For the year, payments are up 1.23 percent, from $1.46 million to $1.48 million.

Reimbursments in Navarro county total $508,492 this month, down 1.44 percent from the $515,967 received last May. Payments this year are down 1.37 percent, from $2.29 million to $2.26 million.

The City of Houston receives $45.7 million, the biggest reimbursement in the state and up 1.23 percent from a year ago.

Dallas is reimbursed $20.2 million, down 8.65 percent from last May.

Sales tax payments were mailed to 1,135 cities this month.
