Performance improved . . .

Fairfield fifth and eighth grade performance levels on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills mathematics examination show marked improvement from 2008 scores.

First administration of the 2009 TAKS math tests was given in April. Students who did not achieve the passing mark have two more opportunities to improve their scores.

In fifth grade, 82 percent of students met the testing standard, com- pared to 70 percent last year.

The test was divided into numbers, operations and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships and algebraic reasoning; geometry and spatial reasoning; concepts and use of measurement; probability and statistics; and mathematical processes and tools.

Out of 129 students tested, 107 passed, 23 failed and one failed the TAKS accomodated test.

A passing score required that students tally 2,100 points by answering 30 of 44 questions correctly. Average score for Fairfield students was 2,259.

Three students had a perfect score of 2,707 and 40 students, 31 percent, were commended for scoring 2,400 points.

Of the students who failed to met the standard, 11 are female and 13 are male.

In eighth grade, 92 percent of students met the testing standard, compared to 66 percent last year.

A total of 115 students passed, out of 123 tested, 10 failed and one failed TAKS accomodated.

Fairfield eighth grade students averaged 2,328 points on the math test and were required to score 2,100 points by answering 30 of 50 questions correctly.

The test included the same sections as on the fifth grade level test.

Four eighth grade students had a perfect score of 2,796 and 51 students, 41 percent of the class, were commended for scoring 2,400 points.

Of the Fairfield eighth grade students that failed the math test, six are female and five are male.
