Saturday vote for cities, schools
Voters throughout Freestone county head to the polls Saturday to make their picks for city council and school board members, and to determine a school bond issue.
Balloting takes place from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. in the cities of Fairfield and Wortham, and in Fairfield, Wortham and Dew school districts.
The City of Teague and Teague Independent School District do not have to hold elections this spring because none of the places to be filled are being contested.
In Fairfield ISD, four candidates are seeking two at-large seats on the board of trustees. Running for those posts are incumbent Blake Robinson and Jabob Carroll, and challengers Glen Price and Eric Chavers.
On the ballot in Wortham ISD are place one incumbent Bill Capers, running unopposed, and Tony Lee, Victoria Butcher, Doug Miller and Gene Price for place two.
Dew ISD is holding an election to issue $3 million in maintenance bonds to fund items such as buses, computer/technology equipment, roof and building repairs, heating/air coditioning equipment replacement, cafeteria equipment, playground equipment and maintenance equipment.
Proceeds from the bonds do not have to be shared with other school district as does most of the property tax revenue received by the district.
Dew ISD is a property wealthy district and must share 75 cents of every dollar it collects in property taxes.
Tax proceeds to retire maintenance bonds, and building bonds, do not have to be shared.
Passage of the bond issue will cost 3.4-6.8 cents per $100 asssessed property valuation to retire.
Running for three places on the Fairfield city council are incumbent Linda York and Leldon Childs for place four, Lane Stripling and Jerry Brim for place five, and incumbent Jo Olive Zickuhr and Kenneth Hughes for place six.
Seeking two at-large seats on the Wortham city council are Butch Davis, Emily Keathley, incumbent Scott Batts and write-in candidate Rodney Price.
Wortham Mayor Judy Edwards is challenged by Ken Gibbs.
City officials serve 2- year terms and school board trustees serve three years.
