Baseball team falls to Athens
Rain on Friday evening postponed a baseball game between the Fairfield high school Eagles and Athens Hornets, but the FHS squad did get to play earlier in the week.
The earlier game, against the Brownsboro Bears, resulted in an 8-2 loss and made a post season playoff spot harder to snare.
Although the Eagles trailed 2-0 after three innings, the game looked to be shaping up as a pitching duel until the Bears plated five in the fourth inning.
The inning started with a strikeout, but the next three Brownsboro batters reached base on a double and a pair of singles, scoring a run.
An error by the Eagles followed the second out, allowing two more runs to score, and a double tacked on another pair of runs.
A relay from left fielder Colby Green, to Justin Terry, to Cullen Minze finished the inning.
The Eagles scored a run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Senior J.R. Vaughn drove in Minze with a double in the fourth and Mitchell Huffman drove in Ryan Wyble with a single in the fifth.
"It was a very frustrating game. The Brownsboro pitcher did a great job of limiting our opportunities on offense," FHS head coach Bill Crawford says.
Terry and Vaughn were on the mound, and neither walked a batter, giving up just three earned runs.
The coach points out that Terry gave up some hits early, but threw strikes and allowed the defense to play behind him.
"We have our backs against the wall, but this will be a great learning experience for these guys as they go through life," Crawford says.
The Eagles are posting a 2-5 district record and have three games on the schedule this week, with Athens, Palestine Westwood and Crockett.
Fairfield lost to Athens and Westwood earlier in the year and beat Crockett in a no-hitter by Terry.
The Crockett game at 6 p.m. Friday at home is the final district game of the season.
