Students read series
TOP FAIRFIELD JUNIOR high school students in a Disney Company-sponsored reading contest are: front l-r, Derek Coleman and Andy McCully; back l-r, Robert Acevedo and Austin Keeney. Students from Fairfield junior high school recently participated in a mythology contest with hopes of winning a grand prize to travel to Greece.
The contest is sponsored by the Disney Company, requiring students to read and take tests on the "Percy Jackson" series of books by author Rick Riordan.
The grand prize trip to Greece will be with the author.
To enter the contest, students were required to read all four books in the series and answer 25 questions on the books during a times test. Ten FJHS students took the written test.
Phase II of the contest was open to the top two students with the highest test score from each grade and consisted of an oral competition of 30 questions.
Semi finalists from fifth grade were Matthew McCully and Dakota Thornburg, from the sixth grade were Austin Keeney and Ryan Kuhlman, from the seventh grade was Andy McCully and from the eighth grade were Robert Acevedo and Derek Coleman.
Overall FJHS winner of the second phase was Coleman who now enters a national pool of winners for the grand prize drawing.
First prize in the contest is a 7-day, 6-night trip for a student, parent and guest at a camp near Austin that is based on the book series.
A total of 15 second place winners receive a complete, authographed set of the book series and "The Olympians," a volume to be released in May.
Second place winner from FJHS is Miss McCully. Two students, Acevedo and Keeney, tied for third place.
