Fairfield Eagles drop decisions
EAGLES PITCHER CULLEN Minze was the first of four Fairfield players to take the mound and try to contain the Brownsboro Bears. Fairfield The Fairfield high school Eagles varsity baseball team played three District 20-AAA games last week, one of them to make up for a weather delay, and a non-district contest, coming up short in all four games.
After last week, the Eagles are 0-4 in district games.
The FHS nine battled from behind in a game against Brownsboro, the first contest of the week, to force an extra inning when the score was tied 6-all at the end of regulation. Brownsboro, however, tallied in the bottom of the eight to win by a run.
Fairfield was scoreless in the first inning and got a run in the second when out fielder Colby Green walked, stole second and third bases and came home on a fielder's choice.
Brownsboro, though, scored four runs the first two innings.
In the third inning, infielder Evan Simpson drew a walk, moved to second on a single by Cullen Minze, stole third and was walked to home.
Eagles out fielder Ryan Wyble led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice.
Fairfield failed to score in the fifth inning, but added two in the top of the sixth. Infielder J.R. Vaughn led off with a walk, moved to third on a double by Simpson and came home on a single by Minze. Simpson scored on a single by designated hitter Aaron Jones.
The Eagles took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh when Wyble hit a 2- out single, stole second and came home on a single by Vaughn.
Brownsboro tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and scored one in the bottom of the eight to end the contest.
FHS pitcher Justin Terry went almost six innings, giving up five runs, seven hits and two walks, while striking out seven.
Coming on in relief in the sixth, Minze gave up two hits and two runs, and was credited with the loss.
Fairfield hosted Athens last Tuesday and were rocked 1-16.
The Hornets scored six runs in the second and nine in the fifth en route to the win.
The Eagles' lone run came in the fouth inning when Simpson doubled, went to second on a single by Aaron Jones and scored on a single by Caleb Gunnels.
Four pitchers worked for the Eagles in the game, but starter Minze was given the loss. Also throwing were Vaughn, Gunnels and Cole Jackson.
In a Friday evening game at home against Palestine Westwood, the Eagles were blanked 5-0.
Pitcher Aaron Jones worked four and one-third innings, gaving up six hits and four runs. Finishing the game, Vaughn gave up two hits and one run, while striking out four.
The non district game against Robinson, played Saturday at home, saw the FHS nine drop a 2-14 decision.
Fairfield scored in the first inning when Mitchell Huffman reached first on an error, advanced on a single by Minze and came home on a single by Simpson.
The second run came in the fifth inning when Wickens reached first on an error and came home on a single by Jackson.
Gunnels was credited with the loss, going three innings and allowing 10 runs off nine hits. Relief pitcher Jackson worked two inning, giving up two hits and four runs.
The Eagles were scheduled to play at Crockett early this week, host Palestine on Thursday and host Brownsboro on Tuesday.
