Nine area baseball teams competed over three days last week in the annual Fairfield Baseball Tournament, won by Rockdale which went unbeaten in four games.

Second place went to China Spring with three wins and one loss.

The Eagles posted a 1-2-1 record.

Other teams were: Corsicana, 2-2; Rusk, 0-4; Ferris, 1-3; Tyler John Tyler, 0-3; Crandall, 2-0-2; Bryan Rudder, 2-1-1; and Jacksonville, 2-1.

"It was a great tournament with very good teams," Fairfield high school head coach Bill Crawford says. "Rockdale provided the offensive fireworks as teams put up runs in gigantic numbers because of the windy conditions."

Rockdale scored a total of 53 runs in four games, including a 27-5 pounding of second place China Spring.

The Eagles beat John Tyler, tied Crandall but won on tie-breakers, and lost to Rudder and Jacksonville.

Fairfield opened its tourney run with a 16-6 loss to a talented Rudder team, which is playing a varsity schedule for the first time this season.

Rudder tallied two runs in the top of the first inning and the Eagles answered in the bottom with a home run shot to left field by sophomore Evan Simpson, cutting the margin in half.

In the third inning, Rudder tallied six runs to take a brief 6-1 lead until Fairfield came to bat and scored five in the bottom of the side.

Starting the Eagles offensive effort was junior Andrew Myers who doubled, followed with a single by junior Ryan Wyble that moved Myers into scoring position at third. The Eagles then executed a double steal to score Myers.

Senior Jake Jones hit an RBI single to score Wyble, Simpson singled and junior Cullen Minze doubled to left center to score Jones and Wyble. A sinble by junior Aaron Jones scored Minze, the fifth Fairfield run of the inning.

The Fairfield pitching staff could not shut down the Rudder bats and the Eagles dropped a 16-6 decision.

The Eagles nine rebounded Friday night with a 12-5 victory over John Tyler.

Behind 3-1 going into the third inning, Fairfield bats came alive to score 11 runs in a single inning en route to a 12-5 win.

Myers opened the third drawing a walk and stealing second and scored on a single by Wyble, who moved around on a single by Jake Jones. Junior Mitchell Huffman then stepped up to the plate to double in Wyble, and Jones came home on a sacrifice fly by Simpson.

Minze rapped an RBI single to score Huffman, then scored on a single by sophomore Justin Terry and junior Colby Green drew a walk and scored on a wild pitch for an 8-3 lead.

Fairfield was not done with the inning yet. After batting around, Myers came back to the place for a 2-out single to score Terry, Wyble hammered a 3-run homer, Jake Jones walked, Huffman singled and Simpson rapped a 2-RBI single.

Picking up his first win of the season, FHS pitcher Aaron Jones pitched five innings, striking out six and allowing two earned runs.

On Saturday morning, the Eagles faced the Class AAAA Jacksonville Indians and kept up for the first three innings before dropping a 12-7 decision.

After giving up a run in the first inning, the Eagles tallied twice to claim a brief 2-1 lead.

Fairfield tallied those runs when Jake Jones reached base on a fielder's choice, a play that erased Wyble at second, stole second and scored on a single by Huffman. Garrett Wickens doubled to score Huffman, who had stolen second base.

Jacksonville scored five runs in the top of the second and the Eagles answered with four to tie the game at 6-all.

With one out, Wyble singled and stole second, Huffman reached first after being hit by a pitch and Simpson cleared the bases with the first of two home runs he would hit Saturday. Minze added the fourth run when he reached first on an error and scored on a triple by Wickens.

Windy conditions worked against FHS pitcher Minze as the first four Jacksonville batters in the fourth inning hit, in order, a single, double, triple and home run. Those four runs, together with a couple of errors, walks, triple and another home run led to a 6-run inning for the Indians.

The Eagles added its last run on a home run in the bottom of the fourth by Simpson.

Fairfield ended its tourney run in a matchup with Crandall, which saw the Eagles come from behind to tie the game and win under a tie-breaker formula.

Trailing 6-4 in the fourth inning with time expired, Fairfield needed a rally and got one. Myers led off with a walk and moved to third on a Wyble double, and Jake Jones doubled to score both runners. Huffman doubled to send Jones to third, Simpson was intentionally walked to load the bases and Minze hit into an odd double play at home and third.

Winning pitcher, in his first varsity start, was freshman Caleb Gunnels.
