Lady Eagles play tournament
Five wins and a pair of losses went into the scorebooks for the Fairfield high school Lady Eagles softball team as they played Slocum early last week and competed in the Jerry's Scoreboard Tournament over the weekend at Burkburnett.
The diamond action gives the Lady Eagles an 8-5 record a week away from the start of the District 20-AAA season.
After 13 games, the FHS nine holds a 54-45 scoring advantage over their opponents.
Fairfield senior pitching ace Courtney Nelson has thrown 63 and two-third innings this season, recording 94 strikeouts in six wins and three losses. With a 2.19 earned run average, she has given up 41 hits, issued 23 walks and surrendered 20 earned runs.
Sophomore Erica Flori has taken the mound for 16 innings, posting a 1.31 ERA while giving up 14 hits, striking out 12, issuing six walks and giving up just three earned runs.
Offensive stats show that senior outfielder Shelby Bayless is leading the team with a .361 batting average, scoring eight times and collecting eight RBI.
Junior shortstop Kayse Kirgan is posting a .306 average and leads the team with six stolen bases, senior first baseman Katlin Neal is batting .294, scoring four times and getting six RBI, and Miss Nelson is at .289, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits, with 13 RBI.
Playing Slocum early last week, the Lady Eagles opened with seven runs the first inning, sending 12 batters up to the plate, en route to an 8-1 win.
Miss Kirgan led off with a single, followed by a fly out to center by Miss Bayless, and back-to-back singles by catcher Becca Lyles and Miss Nelson, and back-toback doubles by third baseman Ariel Campbell and Miss Neal, a pair of singles by Jennifer Bisig and Mia Mayo and a double by Riley Davidson.
Scoring in the inning were Misses Kirgan, Lyles, Nelson, Neal, Bisig, Mayo and Davidson.
After the big start, the Lady Eagles did not get into scoring position until the sixth inning when Miss Nelson powered a solo shot home run over the center field fence.
Slocum scored its only run in the fourth when their pitcher sent a ball over the right center fence.
As the winning pitcher, Miss Nelson struck out seven batters, walked one and gave up three hits.
Fairfield played six games at Burkburnett, winning four to finish fifth out of 25 teams in the tourney.
In their first game, the Lady Eagles blanked Archer City 10-0 in four innings.
The FHS squad scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second and three in the fourth.
Hitting safely, all singles, were Misses Kirgan and Bayless twice each, and Misses Lyles and Nelson. The team capitalized on eight Archer City errors.
Scoring were Misses Kirgan, Bayless, Lyles, Nelson and Campbell, twice each.
On the mound, Miss Nelson got the win with 10 strikeouts, while giving up just one hit. Relief pitcher Miss Flori worked one inning and struck out one batter.
Against Levelland in their second game, the Lady Eagles faced a dominating pitcher and sent just 23 players up to bat over seven innings—-12 of them struck out.
Levelland took the decision 4-0.
Miss Nelson went the distance for FHS, striking out eight, but giving up five hits, four runs and two walks.
Trailing 3-0 until the sixth inning, the Lady Eagles rallied but could not get ahead of Pilot Point, losing 3-2.
Fairfield was unable to mount an offense until the bottom of the sixth when Miss Bayless singled to left field and moved to second base on a passed ball. With two outs, Miss Campbell singled, moved to second on a single by Miss Neal and advanced to third on a passed ball. Misses Bayless and Campbell counted for the only two Fairfield scores.
In taking the loss, Miss Flori struck out three and gave up three hits, three runs and two walks. Miss Nelson came on in relief the last two innings, striking out five and walking one.
The Lady Eagles faced Wylie next, winning 7-2 to start a mini streak to close out the tourney with three consecutive victories.
Fairfield opened scoring in the top of the first inning when leadoff hitter Miss Kirgan drew a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Miss Bayless and came home on a single by Miss Lyles.
Wylie countered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs and led 2-1 until the FHS bats heated up in the fourth and fifth innings.
With one down in the top of the fourth, Miss Nelson reached first on a fielder's choice that put out Miss Lyles, who had singled, at second. Miss Campbell doubled to send Miss Nelson to third and the Fairfield pitcher scored on a passed ball. A single by Miss Neal scored Miss Campbell, giving the Lady Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Back-to-back singles by Misses Mayo and Davidson started the fifth inning, followed by a walk to Miss Kirgan and an RBI single by Miss Bayless. Misses Davidson and Kirgan scored on a double by Miss Lyles and Miss Bayless came home on a passed ball.
Winning pitcher Miss Nelson struck out eight and walked three, and gave up two hits and two runs.
Leading 4-0 through three innings, the Lady Eagles held off a late rally by Iowa Park to take a 4-3 win.
In the first inning, Miss Kirgan led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacri- fice by Miss Bayless and scored on a single by Miss Lyles.
Second inning action saw Miss neal lead off with a triple and score on a single by Miss Bisig.
With two outs in the third, Miss Lyles and went to second on a single by Miss Nelson. Both baserunners scored on a single to right by Miss Campbell.
Taking the win, Miss Nelson struck out five and walked three, while giving up six hits and three runs. With Iowa Park threating, she struck out the last two batters to end the game.
The Lady Eagles gave up a run in the top of the first inning against Petrolia, the sixth of the tourney, and trailed by a run until the third inning.
Shortstop Kayse Kirgan started scoring after reaching first on a fielder's choice which gave the Fairfield squad two outs. Miss Kirgan advanced to second on a single by Miss Bayless and both baserunners advanced on a passed ball. A single to right by Miss Lyles scored two runners, and she crossed the plate on a double by Miss Nelson, giving the team a 3- 1 lead.
Fairfield scored one run in the fourth when Miss Neal singled, moved to second on a passed ball and came home on a single to center by Miss Mayo.
In the bottom of the fifth, Misses Lyles, Nelson and Campbell drew walks in order to load the bases and scored on a single by Miss Neal and double by Miss Davidson. Miss Neal also scored.
Winning pitcher Miss Nelson struck out eight, while giving up three hits and a run.
