Freestone County Senior Services not only provides a nutrition program (Senior Centers and Meals on Wheels), but it also provides transit services.
This includes rural public transportation, Title XIX non-emergency medical transportation (Medicaid), and Title III senior citizen transportation.
We operate on a demand-response program which requires the rider to call 48 hours in advance.
If you need transportation, please call Freestone County Transit at (903) 389-5800.
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. If you are age 50 or over, you should have your first colonoscopy.
Regular colorectal cancer screening or testing is one of the most powerful weapons in preventing colorectal cancer.
Screening can result in finding colorectal cancer early when it is highly curable.
If you have any of the following, you should check with your doctor for prompt diagnosis and treatment:
-A change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool, that lasts for more than a few days
-A feeling that you need to have a bowel movement that is not relieved by doing so
-Rectal bleeding, dark stools, or blood in the stool (often, though, the stool will look normal)
-Cramping or abdominal (stomach area) pain
-Weakness and fatigue
Most of these symptoms are more likely to be caused by conditions other than colorectal cancer, such as infection, hemorrhoids, or inflammatory bowel disease.
Still, if you have any of these problems, it is important that you see your doctor.
You can prevent Colorectal Cancer by exercising, eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, getting the recommended screening evaluations, maintaining a healthy weight, avoid use of tobacco, and avoiding excessive use of alcohol.
Please, please know that early screening can save your life -- it did mine!
