TRAGEDY AT KIRVIN

"Flames After Midnight" written by former Fairfield resident and attorney Monte Akers of Austin, deals with the burning of three black men in Kirven (Kirvin) in upper Freestone county on May 5, 1922, following the rape and murder of a 17- year-old Kirven girl the day previously.

Two of the men, Akers relates, probably were innocent of the crime but were implicated by a third man, who almost surely was guilty.

Still, all three died in a fire set around a heavy farm implement in downtown Kirven, some 48 hours after the young woman was seized while riding a horse near Kirven, raped and then stabbed to death.
