FJHS girls get 4-game sweep
The Fairfield junior high school Lady Eagles basketball teams swept the Palestine Westwood Lady Panthers last week, with one game going into overtime before a win was secured.
FJHS cagers met the Lady Panthers in district games at Palestine.
In seventh grade A action, the Lady Eagles battled Westwood to a 31- all tie at the end of regulation, forcing an overtime period.
The Lady Eagles out scored the Lady Panthers 7-6 in overtime to claim a 38-37 win.
"It was a nail biter, but the girls stuck together and pulled out a win," coach Lia Frederick reports.
"I'm proud of their perserverance—-they really needed a game to prove they have gumption. I'm proud to be their coach," she declares.
Reaching double digits for Fairfield were Tiara Tatum, 15 points, and Bree Bossier, 11 points.
Others scoring were: Kendell Emmons, 5; Peyton Pierce, 3; Kayli Banks, 2; and Karonesha Lawry, 2.
Best offensive players were Misses Tatum and Bossier, top defensive players were Misses Lawry and Pierce, and best rebounder was Miss Emmons.
The seventh grade B squad claimed a win in a low scoring 16-6 contest.
"I'm so proud of these girls! We worked hard all season and came away undefeated," coach Brandy Lynch says.
"Every player contributed to the successful season we've had," she adds.
Scoring for Fairfield were: Megan Hodges, 6; Alexis Ruder, 6; Haylee Worley, 2; and Kamry Whitehead, 2.
Best offensive players were Misses Hodges and Ruder, top defensive player was Carla Shamblin, and best rebounders were Miss Whitehead and Brianne Faughn.
The FJHS eighth grade A team more than tripled the Westwood score in claiming a 39-12 district win.
"The girls shot the ball extremely well tonight. They were confident and played as a team, even though we were short handed," coach Sally Hickerson says.
In double digits with 11 points each were Sadie Schaefer and Jasmine Griffin.
Others scoring were: Kassi Floyd, 9; Kati Gardner, 4; and Amy Lansford, 4.
Best offensive players were Misses Schaefer and Floyd, top defensive players were Hannah Worley and Natalie Neill, and best rebounders were Misses Griffin and Gardner.
Lady Eagles eighth grade B cagers beat the Lady Panthers 14-6.
"The girls played great defense tonight. We did a good job running the fast break and getting the ball up the court," coach Lynch reports.
Scoring for Fairfield were: Katie Berger, 7; Taylor Moore, 2; Maegan Mayo, 2; Destany Weaver, 2; and Amanda Drake, 1.
Best offensive player was Miss Berger, top defensive players were Misses Mayo and Moore, and best rebounders were Amanda Missildine and Miss Drake.
