Fairfield hosts area powerlifters
A TOTAL OF 197 POWERLIFTERS, boys and girls, competed Saturday in the first annual Fairfield Invitational meet held at Johnson Activity Center. In their first time hosting a meet in more than 20 years, the Fairfield high school powerlifting drew 197 entries to compete Saturday in the Fairfield Invitational.
The meet included 11 boys' teams and seven girls' teams.
"I've been in powerlifting for 23 years and this was, by far, the smoothest first meet I've ever had," FHS head coach Kevin Childers says.
"All the credit goes to our workers and volunteers," he adds.
Powerlifting competition consists of bench press, dead lift and squat. Weights of the three lifts are added to get a total for each athlete.
The boys' team title was won by Palestine, Crockett placed second and Huntsville was third.
West won the girls' team title, Mansfield Timberview placed second and Waco Midway finished third.
Highest total for any lifter was 1,710 pounds lifted by Aaron Gonzales of Palestine Westwood in the super-heavyweight class. Gonzales had a 440-pound bench press, 299.4-pound dead lift and 720-pound squat.
FAIRFIELD POWERLIFTER Lamar O'Brien totaled 1,080 pounds on three lifts to win the 165-pound class of a meet held here Saturday. Best total in the girls' meet was 655 pounds by Winona McGowan of Rusk in the 181-pound class and Saquorya Hill of Timberview in the 220- plus class.
Fairfield lifter Lamar O'Brien set the pace for the host team by winning the 165-pound class with a total 1,080 pounds. O'Brien squatted 400 pounds, bench pressed 265 and dead lifted 415 pounds.
Taking fourth place in the 114-pound class was Tulio Cordon of Fairfield, totaling 655 pounds.
Fourth place in the 181- pound class went to Brodrick White of Fairfield for a total of 1,025 pounds.
In the 242-pound class, FHS lifter Anthony Smith totaled 1,245 pounds for fourth place.
Top performer among the Fairfield girls was Karmen Miller who tallied 570 pounds for third place in the 148-pound class. Her marks were 215 in squat, 115 bench press and 235 dead lift.
Fourth place in the 132- pound class went to FHS competitor Jazzmin Hatcher for a 3-lift total of 545 pounds.
Taking fifth in the 114- pound class with a total of 370 pounds was Ashley Whatley of Fairfield.
Rounding out the Fairfield girls' entries was Shelby Wickens, who finished eighth in the 132- pound class with a total of 450 pounds.
