FJHS boys win district games
Three wins in three district games were notched last week by the Fairfield junior high school Eagles against the Palestine Westwood Panthers.
Fairfield hosted the three district games. Seventh grade B cagers did not play.
Eighth grade Eagles A cagers took a 10-6 first period lead over the Panthers and matched points in the second period for a 19-15 advantage at intermission.
The FJHS quintet scored 14 points in the third period and eight in the fourth, giving up six in the third and blanking Westwood in the fourth, for a 41-21 win.
"We played a real solid second half, holding Westwood to just six points for the half and none in the fourth quarter. It was a good game for us," coach Lynn Caffey says.
After taking a 10-6 lead the first period, the coach reports Clayton Stone came off the bench and hit seven of the team's nine points in the second quarter to maintain the lead.
In double digits with 10 points each were Cody Sell and Stone.
Others scoring were: Josh Munoz, 8; Aaron Cain, 7; Will Akers, 4; and Jay Roberson, 2.
Leading rebounders were Sell and Akers.
The eighth grade B squad blanked the Panthers 12-0 the first period and added 14 points in the second period to lead 26-4 at half-time.
Fairfield tallied 16 points the second half and gave up 2 for a lopsided 42- 6 win.
"This was the most complete game played by our team all year. The defensive was outstanding and the offense was clicking on all cylinders," coach Michael Posey says.
Scoring for the Eagles were: Drew Qualls, 8; Gerardo Castro, 8; Ryan Knight, 8; Cody Betser, 6; Coleman Walthall, 2; Will Doyle, 2; Cullen Lyles, 2; Micah Hubbert, 2; and Roberto Acevedo, 2.
Leading rebounders were Doyle, Hubbert and Acevedo.
In seventh grade A action, the Eagles jumped out to a 13-6 advantage the first period and held a 23- 12 lead at the half.
Fairfield added 21 second half points and gave up nine to notch a 44-21 win.
"What else can I say about these guys? They are always prepared when we hit the court," coach Clint Elliott says.
"A big part of our success goes to the work the kids put into practice and the resilient defense. Every player plays an important role in our success," he adds.
Reaching double digits with 10 points was Wyatt Curry.
Others scoring were: Danny Cockerell, 9; Keil Meredith, 6; Alex Ward, 6; Luke Rachel, 5; Cade Warren, 2; Bryson Gates, 2; Byron Mireles, 2; and Larry Rose, 2.
