Each applicant is assessed by a Freestone County Senior Services staff member (based on guidelines by the Department of Aging and Disability Service) to determine eligibility. We currently have routes in the Butler, Fairfield, Teague, and Wortham areas. We would like to expand the delivery area, however, we will need volunteers to do this. Volunteers are the vital link in our services and they add an immeasurable human value to the quality of what we do. It is the goal of Senior Services that all of our clients (both congregate and homebound) are treated with dignity and respect. Our volunteers are the living examples of that belief. Meals on Wheels offers many opportunities for those who would like to get involved in the community and help seniors stay independent. Volunteers, using their own automobile, can choose a day(s) to deliver meals. Delivery time is typically between 11:00 a.m. and Noon. In addition to meal delivery, volunteers are often the only contact our clients have all day; they provide a warm smile and a caring attitude; they are a safety check to help ensure our clients' well-being; they are the eyes and ears of Meals on Wheels and often alert us to clients with additional needs. Delivery volunteers are required to have a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, have completed a one-hour orientation.
