FJHS boys sweep Athens
A clean sweep went into the scorebooks last week when the Fairfield junior high school Eagles basketball teams defeated the Athens Hornets in all four games played.
The district games were played Thursday in Fairfield.
In eighth grade A action, the Eagles trailed the Hornets 8-9 the first period and turned up the head to win the second period and take an 18-16 lead into intermission.
Fairfield tallied 24 points the second half and gave up 21 to grab a 42-37 win.
"It was a pretty evenly matched game. Both teams played hard and played well," coach Lynn Caffey says. "I was real proud of the way our guys kept their focus and held on to a slim lead."
Reaching double digits were William Akers, 14 points, and Cooper Cole, 13 points.
Others scoring were: Aaron Cain, 7; Josh Munoz, 4; Clayton Stone, 2; and Cody Sell, 2.
Leading rebounders were Akers and Cole.
Eagles eighth grade B cagers took a 4-2 first period lead over the Hornets, but fell behind 11-12 by half-time in what was to be a close game throughout.
Fairfield recaptured the lead 17-16 in the third period and were out scored by a point in the final stanza to wind up tied 24-all at the end of regulation.
The Eagles won an overtime period 4-3 to win 28-27.
"This was a great game played by our kids. Every time Athens had momentum, we would respond and overcome," coach Michael Posey says.
Scoring for the Eagles were: Gerardo Castro, 9; Hayden Hill, 8; Coleman Walthall, 4; Drew Qualls, 2; Cullen Lyles, 2; Roberto Acevedo, 2; and Micah Hubbert, 1.
Defensive leaders were Cody Betser, Will Doyle, Nirmal Patel, Ryan Knight and Emilio Martinez.
Fairfield seventh grade A cagers trailed the Hornets 8- 10 the first period and were three points behind at the half, 14-17.
The FJHS quintet rallied for 16 points in the third period, taking a 31-20 lead, and added 17 in the fourth period to win 47-25.
"Although we were down going into half-time, we came together the second half and played great team ball," coach Clint Elliott says. "These guys are getting better each time we play."
Reaching double digits were Bryson Gates, 14 points, and Larry Rose, 12 points.
Others scoring were: Jacob Gallegos, 8; Danny Cockerell, 3; Luke Rachel, 2; Byron Mireles, 2; Alex Ward, 2; Cade Warren, 2; and Wyatt Curry, 2.
The seventh grade B Eagles played to a 4-all tie the first period against Athens before taking charge and gaining a 14-6 advantage at half-time.
Fairfield cagers stayed ahead of Athens through the third period, 16-14, and added nine points in the fourth to secure a 25-19 win.
"These guys played hard all night. They have had a great season," Elliott says.
Scoring for the Eagles were: Chris Munoz, 8; Coy Pierce, 7; Colton Gatson, 6; and Alex Hoskins, 4.
