Cold weather threatening to come down from Canada. We think it is cold here when the temperature is in the 20's…..I noted on the weather map that Dawson, Canada showed a reading of -54 degrees! Now brother, that is cold. That would make our 20's feel like Havana, Cuba in the summertime. I learned long ago that we can function very well in the winter if in addition to the usual coat, we cover our hands, head and ears. If it turns cold this week, I hope everybody remembers that little squirt of advice. It does work. This brings to mind an old gentleman I met in our Courthouse about 25 years ago. He had served in the First World War with Mr. Hugh B. Steward, but unfortunately, I do not recall his name. That particular morning it was brutally cold, about 5 or 6 degrees above zero, with a very strong north wind. He walked up and introduced himself to me in the hallway, and asked if I knew his good friend, Hugh B. Steward? I replied that I most certainly did and told that I imagined Mr. Hugh Birt was at his residence on Bateman, warming by a fire…..A mischievous look came in his watery blue old eyes and he said, "Well young man, I believe it is colder over in Groesbeck than it is here in Fairfield. About an hour ago, when I passed by the Courthouse in Groesbeck, why the World War One Doughboy statue had jumped down off his pedestal and gone in the Courthouse to warm up, rifle, helmet and all!" I couldn't top that one and knew it….Nor would I have tried. It brought him too much joy to pull it on me!
Until Next Week…..Ralph Billings
