Former Fairfield resident Cameron McCabe, 42, died last week in a fire at his home near Buffalo.

The fire was reported at 4:46 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, on PR 3060 in the Cedar Creek Addition.

A 14-year-old girl, identified as McCabe's daughter, jumped out a second floor window of the house to safety after she was awakened by heat and smoke, Leon County Sheriff's Office Chief Investigator Victor Smith reports.

The sheriff's office, Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department and Buffalo Police Department responded to the fire.

Smith says that McCabe's body was recovered in a first floor bedroom after the fire was extinguished.

An autopsy was ordered by Peace Justice Lori Reid, precinct two.

Investigation by the sheriff's office police department and state fire marshal's office indicate the fire originated near a wood burning stove in the first floor living room of the house.

The blaze totally destroyed the house.

Smith reports that arson is not suspected in the fire.

McCabe was a graduate of Fairfield high school and worked as an electrician at the NRG plant in Jewett.

He is survived by a son, Dustin McCabe of Buffalo; a daughter, Laken Camille McCabe of Buffalo; parents James and Martha McCabe of Fairfield; two brothers, James McCabe and wife Heather of Plano, and Nathan McCabe and wife Jessica of Fairfield; and a granddaughter, Ariel Grace McCabe of Buffalo.

A memorial service was held Sunday at Walters Buffalo Funeral Home.
