County drug testing may not meet legal standard
For current employees, elected officials . . .
      As Freestone county commissioners reviewed the county's employee manual on Monday they voted to establish random drug-testing for all current county employees, including elected officials, which has been the subject of frequent litigation in federal courts for several years without consensus.

14-U baseball select team to hold tryouts
      A tryout for a 14-U select baseball team is set for Saturday, Jan. 24, at Teague City Park. Tryouts for the spring and summer seasons are from 10 a.m.-noon. The team will play up to two tournaments per month on Saturdays and Sundays. Practices are to be determined as the year progresses.

Spring planting set for vineyard
Texas Vineyard and Smokehaus . . .
      With the planting of a grape vineyard and lavender field this spring, Rafael and Cheryl Hernandez, owners of Texas Vineyard and Smokehaus in Palestine, are sowing seeds to expand their business. The couple opened the GoTexan venture early last year. The business offers a variety of Texas products including wines, jams, salsas, spreads and sausages.

      To commemorate civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a parade will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. in downtown Mexia. Lineup will begin at 9:30 a.m. in front of the First United Methodist Church at Commerce and Canton Streets.

      The new statewide Twogether in Texas healthy marriage initiative is offering $60 off marriage license fees to Freestone County couples. All the couple has to do is attend a free eight-hour secular healthy marriage workshop. The workshop will be held at Fairfield City Hall from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31.

      Celebrating her 100th birthday on Friday is centenarian Reatha Ray of Fairfield. Mrs. Ray was born on Jan. 9, 1909 in Coryell county. She married Odell Ray at the age of 17. Together the couple had two children.

      Fairfield humane organization, New Leash on Life, requests donations including collars for both cats and dogs, old blankets, plastic or wire crates, cat litter, food, and gift cards for prescriptions. For individuals who cannot adopt animals but want to provide support for the group, donations give organizers much needed supplies.
