Subvarsity girls play tournament

Subvarsity cagers on Fairfield high school Lady Eagles squads won twice and lost once in tournament action over the weekend at Robinson.

The freshmen and junior varsity teams played separate tourney brackets and posted matching results.

Fairfield jv opened the tourney against Waco University and quickly showed which team was in charge, taking an 18-2 lead the first period and 34-4 advantage at half-time.

The Lady Eagles added 11 points the third period and 19 in the fourth to secure a lopsided 64-13 win.

Reaching double digits, 10 points each, were Olivia Gallegos and Fruncheska Daniels.

Others scoring were: Krystal Rischer, 8; Markeisha Cox, 8; Felicia Lopez- Simmons, 6; Kathleen Chappell, 6; Trilandria Titus, 4; and Kalyn Caffey, 2.

Top rebounders were Misses Rischer, Titus, Cox and Caffey.

Fairfield played Lorena in the second round and ran into some difficulty, trailing 10-15 the first period and 18-24 at half-time.

The Lady Eagles won the third period 9-6 to narrow the margin to 27-30, but were out blanked the final stanza to lose 27-47.

Scoring for the jv were: Gallegos, 7; Chappell, 6; Cox, 6; Brown, 5; Caffey, 2; and Rischer, 1.

Top rebounders were Misses Titus, Gallegos and Cox.

Fairfield jv cagers started well in their final game, against Rosebud-Lott, taking a 16-9 lead and working that to a 33- 17 advantage by the half.

The Lady Eagles tallied 10 points in the third period and eight in the fourth, giving up two and three, for a 51-22 win.

"We showed great effort and teamwork all around," coach Biezenski says.

In double digits with 14 points each were Miss Gallegos and Keanna Cox.

Others scoring were: Brown, 6; Rischer, 6; Andrea Griffin, 4; Caffey, 4; and Chappell, 2.

Top rebounders were Misses Titus, Caffey, Gallegos, Andrea Griffin and Brown.

Fairfield frosh had the same kind of start as did the jv, against University, and took a 9-6 lead the first period and 22-17 advantage at intermission.

The Lady Eagles added 17 points the third period and 12 in the fourth, giving up four and six, to win 51-27.

In double digits with 10 points each were Christy Harper and Fruncheska Daniels.

Others scoring were: Jayda Griffin, 6; and Denise Washington, 5.

Best defensive players were Misses Harper and Andrea Griffin, best rebounders were Miss Washington and Emelia Adu, and best all-around was Miss Daniels.

The Fairfield frosh met their match in the second round against Robinson, falling behind 4-8 the first period and trailing 8-20 at the half.

The Lady Eagles scored 18 second half points and gave up 19 to drop a 26-39 decision.

Scoring leader was Andrea Griffin, 10 points.

Other scorers were: Harper, 6; Daniels, 4; Adu, 3; Dineshia Lowery, 2; and Washington, 1.

Best defensive players were Misses Griffin and Adu, top rebounders were Misses Griffin and Daniels, and best all-around were Misses Griffin and Daniels.

In their final tourney appearance, the frosh jumped out to a 19-11 lead over Crawford and added another 10 points the second period to lead 29-17 at half-time.

The Lady Eagles scored 13 points the third period and 17 in the fourth, giving up six in each, to win 59-29.

In double digits were Miss Griffin, 20 points, Miss Harper, 13 points, and Miss Brown, 12 points.

Also scoring was Miss McGowan, five points.

Best defensive player was Miss McGowan, top rebounders were Misses Griffin and Washington, and best allaround was Miss Griffin.

The jv squad was scheduled to play Teague early this week, and both teams play at China Spring on Tuesday.
