Eagles jv takes tournament second

At Whitney over the weekend . . .

Cagers on the Fairfield high school Eagles junior varsity basketball team claimed second place Saturday in the Whitney Tournament.

The tourney was played Thursday and Saturday, featuring freshmen and jv teams.

In a low scoring first period opener against Blooming Grove, the Eagles jv trailed 3- 6, then found their stride to win the second period and pull within a point at halftime, 10-11.

The FHS quintet tallied 13 points the third period and 16 in the fourth, giving up two and eight, for a 39-21 win.

"These young Eagles were able to come out and play from start to finish and get our first win of the season," coach Jody Walker says.

Leading the offense with 12 points was Robert Durham.

Others scoring were: Cooper Vandiver, 7; Vernard Evans, 6; Dillon Burgess, 6; Jay Brown, 4; Cody Anderson, 2; Desmond Roberts, 2; and Tulio Cordon, 2.

Playing well, defensively, were guards Garrett Thompson, Brown, Cordon and Anderson.

The jv Eagles defeated host Whitney 39-20 to advance to the championship game.

In double digits were Durham, 13 points, and Burgess, 11.

Also scoring were: Thompson, 4; Vandiver, 4; Brown, 2; and Anderson, 1.

"We were able to play on up tempo game to our liking and score quality baskets for a good team win," Walker reports.

Facing Gatesville for the tourney championship, the Eagles dropped a 33-44 decision.

Leading scorer Durham tallied 20 points.

Others scoring were: Evans, 4; Burgess, 3; Thompson, 2; Brown, 2; and Vandiver, 2.

"We played a great first half, but let things get away from us the second half," Walker says. "The kids played tough but came up a little short."

Fairfield frosh cagers started well, playing Huntsville to a 6-all tie the first period and 17-all tie the second half in the tourney opener with Groesbeck.

The Eagles took control in the third period, securing a 32-23 lead, and tallied 17 points in the final stanza to win 49-30.

Leading the offense with 24 points was Jay Brown, who was joined in double digits by teammate T. Wheeler, 14 points.

Others scoring were: Jeff Carter, 7; Matthew Peine, 4; Darius Roberts, 4; T. Grant, 2; and Brady Johnson, 2.

Second round action saw the frosh Eagles fall behind Whitney 5-6 the first period and 8-16 at the half.

Fairfield made a move in an 8-1 third period, to pull within one at 17-17, but were out pointed in the final stanza to lose 21-24.

Scoring were: Wheeler, 6; Carter, 5; Cole Jackson, 5; Roberts, 3; and Johnson, 2.

The frosh Eagles played a seesaw battle in their third game against Gatesville, at least in the early going as they led 10-8 the first period and trailed 14-17 at intermission.

Fairfield scored 14 points in the third period to claim a 22-22 lead and tacked on 10 more in the fourth period to win 38-36.

In double digits were Carter, 12 points, and Roberts, 10.

Others scoring were; Ernest Becks, 6; Wheeler, 5; Xavier Betts, 3; and Johnson, 2.

The subvarsity teams play Tuesday at China Spring.
