To Wortham High, Ms. Paden's Art Class. Had a great time. Did I teach them how to paint another Cistine Chapel? Nope, sho' didn't. Did I tell them about the fascinating bronzes and marbles that I had worked on through the years. Nope, didn't do that either. What I did do was bring along an accomplished leather artisan, Mr. Jim Plantt, to show them how to turn a plain piece of leather into a work of art, functionalism and beauty. It did not hurt a bit that he is an accomplished saddle maker of 40 plus years experience! Anyway, they were a very good bunch of young people to deal with and both of us had a really enjoyable time in their presence.

Had the pleasure of attending the 50th Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Clois Mullen with a very large assemblage of Family and Friends. Everything laid out just right for Clois and Charlotte. This pair has served as an example for several generations of our citizens. Parents, grandparents, friends to all. Good Folks…..Won't find none better. Several years ago, Clois maintained a triangular shaped garden, unfenced, near their residence, right on East 84. One hot day in the summer, I passed by and left a note taped on a tomato cage. The note read, " Clois, am enjoying the tomatoes each week. I appreciate your labors. By the way, this row seems to taste a little sweeter than the other two. Suggest we plant just this variety next year…….signed……A Friend." That particular spot is white sand, in which each footprint leaves a deep imprint. I walked up and down the rows leaving plenty of tracks, to convince Clois that someone had definitely been in his garden. I well remember, to this day, that I ruined the fresh shine on my boots. I finally, several days later, confessed to Clois at the Post Office, that I was the culprit who had left the note….. Strange thing though…..I believe that was the last year he gardened at that particular plot! Moved it for some reason! And for those of you of a suspicious nature…..No, I didn't pilfer any of his 'maters. I merely left the note!
Until Next Week…..RALPH BILLINGS
