THE U.S. POST OFFICE in Fairfield received an unscheduled remodeling Friday afternoon when this pickup truck crashed into the front entry of the building. Nobody was hurt in the wreck. The U.S. Post Office in downtown Fairfield closed a few hours early Friday afternoon after it received an unscheduled remodeling.

Remodeling consisted of a pickup truck running into the south side foyer.

The wreck occurred at 1:42 p.m. when a 1981 GMC pickup truck driven by Dorothy Moore Hollis, 83, of Fairfield crashed into the foyer, and proceeded most of the way into the building.

Black tire marks on the sidewalk in front of the post office indicated that the truck remained under power after striking the building.

Mrs. Hollis told Fairfield police that she had entered the post office parking lot from E. Commerce Street prior to accidently striking the building.

An eye witness to the wreck, Fairfield city council member Luke Ward, Jr., says he was at a counter in the facility when the crash occurred, and that the truck rear tires continued to spin after the vehicle stopped.

The post office is constructed of cut stone. Damage was to plate glass windows in the foyer, stone surrounding the windows and a stone column.

Fairfield interim Postmaster Greg Kazmierczak reports that a damage estimate is not yet available from the owner of the building.

Because of concern about structural damage, the facility was closed Friday after the wreck.

Postal patrons are using a west side entrance until repairs can be made.

Mrs. Hollis was not issued a traffic citation.
