Against Ferris Yellowjackets . . . Frosh, jv gridders get wins
      Freshmen and junior varsity football teams at Fairfield high school started the 2010 season right by securing a win each over the Ferris Yellowjackets. The Eagles subvarsity squads kicked off the season last Thursday on the road. In jv action, the jv blanked the Yellowjackets 29-0, scoring on offense and defense.

Subvarsity girls win 3 matches
      Subvarsity Lady Eagles volleyball teams won three of four matches last week against Waco University and Ferris. The Fairfield high school teams hosted both schools. Lady Eagles junior varsity spikers started the week with a victory in two games against University 27-25, 25- 11. In the Ferris match, the Fairfield jv again won in two games 25-23, 25-16.

Frosh, jv girls play tourney
      In the Teague Tournament played recently, Fairfield high school Lady Eagles spikers took third place. The jv volleyball team won two matches and lost one. Lady Eagles started against Hillsboro, winning a close match 26-24, 25-17. Second round action saw the squad take its only loss, to Madisonville, in three games 25-21, 17-25, 13-25.

Bass tourney to aid scholarships
      Fairfield Young Farmers holds its first annual bass fishing tournament Saturday, Sept. 11, in support of its college scholarship fund. Tourney headquarters is Oak Cove Marina on Richland-Chambers Reservoir. Gold Sponsor for the event is Fairfield VFW Post 5872. Check-in starts at 5 a.m., launch time is the first safe light and weigh-in is 3 p.m.

Eagle Field tilt makes history
      Eagle Field was the site of a little football history last week when the Snook Blue Jays lined up for their first varsity game since the 1950s. The Blue Jays fell to the Riesel Indians 46-0. Fairfield Independent School District athletic director Darrell Piske reports that the game was played Thursday night in Fairfield because the Riesel field was not in game condition.

Hunter safety course offered
      A Hunter Education Safety Course will be offered on Sept. 18-19 at the Freestone County Sheriff’s Training Center. The course will be held from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday. To register, call the Texas Agrilife Extension Service Freestone County office in Fairfield.

In matches, tourney . . . FHS spikers mix results
      The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team played a tournament and a pair of dual matches last week with mixed results. Varsity spikers won the challenger’s bracket of the Centerville Tournament on Saturday, defeated Waco University early in the week and fell on Ferris on Friday.
