Walk-a-thon set Saturday in Teague
      The Booker T. Washington and J.A. Brooks Alumni Association sponsors a walk-a-thon for Education Saturday at Brooks/Washington Park on Jefferson Street in Teague starting at 9 a.m. All BTW/JAB students, family, friends and scholarship recipients are asked to participate. Donations go toward the scholarship funds. There will be refreshments, games and door prizes.

4-H Rally Day set for Sept. 11
      Freestone County 4-H is hosting its Rally Day, Saturday, Sept. 11, from 3- p.m. at the Moody Reunion Fairgrounds in Fairfield. Parents and kids will be able to learn what 4-H has to offer as well as play games. Supper will be provided and participants should be prepared to get wet. Parent and child sign up begins at 3 p.m.

Historical meeting set for Tuesday
      Freestone County Historical Commission’s monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 7, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Training Center on US Highway 84 between Fairfield and Teague. The program this month will be given by Marty Walker from Teague. Refreshments, furnished by the Teague and Streetman members, will be served following the meeting.

‘Hunks’ sought for calendar
      Courthouse Café, All Things Write and Studio G Photography are working together in a fundraising effort for Relay for Life. “Hometown Hunks” 2011 calendar is in the works and will be available in November.

Jobless rate holds steady
      Unemployment rate for Freestone county held steady in July and remains the lowest in the area. Texas Workforce Commission released July unemployment statistics last week. Freestone county remains at 6.9 percent. Figures show that out of a total workforce of 10,347, there are 715 workers without jobs.

Tax rate unchanged . . . FHD approves budget
      In spite of losing 13 percent in taxable property values this year, Fairfield Hospital District is leaving its tax rate unchanged. The FHD board of directors met last week to approve the 2010 tax rate and 2010-11 operating budget. Property tax levy is set at 3.659 cents per $100 assess valuation, which will bring in an estimated $815,091.

     FAIRFIELD VFW POST 5872 makes a donation to Freestone County Senior Services to pay the costs of 100 meals for elderly county residents who are unable to contribute to the program.

CNB acquires Red Oak bank
      Community National Bank and Trust of Texas, headquartered in Corsicana, acquired the Red Oak branch of Jefferson Bank last week. CNB has locations in Corsicana, Fairfield, Frost, Buffalo and Richland- Chambers Reservoir. The bank is owned by Community Bank Holdings of Texas and has assets of $350 million.

Vehicle wreck results . . . Wide load snarls traffic
      A Fairfield Police Department patrol car sustained extensive front end damage last week, partly as a result of a tractor trailer rig with a wide load that had parked and was blocking traffic on E. Commerce Street. The wreck, involving the police car and a sports utility vehicle, occurred at 9:28 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of E. Commerce and Cotton streets.

Closings set Monday for Labor Day
      Most Fairfield area businesses, county government offices, post offices and schools will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day. Students at Teague, Fairfield, Dew and Wortham schools get their first school holiday Monday, and city and county offices will also be closed.

Gardner family reunion is set
      The 2010 Gardner family reunion will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, beginning at 10 a.m. Lunch will be held at noon in the fellowship hall of Dew Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome to come by and visit, share memories and renew acquaintances with the descendants of the Late Will Bell Gardner and wife, Emma Alice Smith Gardner.

Hoop house workshop set
      A hoop house construction workshop, sponsored by Feed Texas First, will be held Saturday, Sept. 18 at the old Emmons farm located at 450 E. Highway 84 between Fairfield and Antioch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop will include constructing and erecting a hoop house and discussion of proper site location and uses.

Entries open for county hay show
      Entries for the 2010 Freestone County Hay Show are now being accepted at seven locations within the county. Each producer is allowed one free sample and each additional sample costs $5. Samples should be taken from the core of both round and square bales, and producers should avoid pulling samples from the outer 4-6 inches of round bales.

      Fairfield resident, Mary Sue Thornton, is appearing in the third annual Dallas Spectacular Senior Follies to be held at the Eisemann Center Theater in Richardson on September 3,4 and 5, 2010. Miss Thornton will be singing and dancing for the second year in the Follies ensemble.

VFW Ladies set autumn schedule
      VFW Ladies Auxiliary will meet every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to decorate Christmas stockings for veterans in the Waco VA Hospital as well as working on other projects. The club president’s special project is to fill the needs for the clothes closet at the VA Hospital in Waco. Items needed are washing powder, bath, shower and personal hygiene products.

      Fairfield’s city secretary, Jana Taylor, hosted the central Texas Municipal Clerks Association’s quarterly meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 18. Eighteen people were in attendance at the lunch meeting held at the city conference center.

      Michael and Barbara Marfell of Fairfield and Jimmy and Janice Davis of Venus announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their children, Chassidy Jean Marfell and Richard Matthew Davis. The bride is a 2008 graduate of Fairfield high school. The groom is a 2007 home school graduate and is currently self-employed.

      Mr. and Mrs. Bill Fort of Alpine announce the engagement of their daughter, Holly Anne Fort, to Charles Justin Manahan, son of Cam and Deb Manahan of Fairfield. Miss Fort is a 2002 graduate of Alpine high school and a 2007 graduate of Texas A and M University. She is employed as a petroleum landman.

      “We Care” support” group will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Buffalo Missionary Baptist Church. The meeting, typically held on Mondays, is changed to Tuesday due to the Labor Day weekend. These meetings are open to the public and everyone is invited to attend. Location is at Haggard/Main behind Tom’s Mini-Mart.

      Celebrating 60 years of marriage last month were W.A. “Bill” and Mary Fleetwood of Fairfield. The couple was married on Aug. 26, 1950 in Houston, TX where they lived and worked for many years before moving to Fairfield in the 1980s.

      Natalie Gentry, daughter of Robert and Betty Gentry of Fairfield, became the bride of Casey Martin, son of Kathy Stadtlander and Billy Martin of Shreveport, LA on Saturday, Aug. 21. The ceremony took place at Scottsville Chapel in Scottsville and was officiated by Paul Kethley from First United Methodist Church of Fairfield. The couple has made their hope in Shreveport, LA.

Mexia Church hosts barbecue
     St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mexia is hosting its 50th annual barbecue and auction on Oct. 3. This year, the large raffle prize is a Ranger Polaris with trailer. Tickets are on sale now for $20 each and can be purchased from St. Mary’s parishioners or at the barbecue.
